SEARCH  AND  TEACH
EARLY  IDENTIFICATION and  INTERVENTION

“To help children conquer fear of failure, to inspire them to realize their full potential – there are few tasks nobler, more meaningful and more essential for the betterment of society as a whole.”

Alpha  to  Omega in collaboration with NILD ( National Institute for  Learning Development) brings to you “SEARCH  AND  TEACH”.

Together they are a powerful pair
“The strength of SEARCH & TEACH is in early intervention. This twofold approach offers educators an effective tool for catching learning disorders at the beginning of a child's academic career, before the downward spiral of failure begins. With proper and timely identification and intervention, many children can be spared the lifelong consequences of learning disorders.”

Recent and current research indicates the value of a ‘preventive’ approach to deal with potential learning problems in the future. NILD has taken the challenge to provide help for young students ( K-2nd grade).

SEARCH & TEACH  is an early identification and intervention program developed to meet the educational needs of young learners before they experience the frustration of learning failure.  It is a powerful tool for identifying and preventing various problems in young children.

SEARCH is a 20-minute individual test designed to identify 5 and 6 year olds vulnerable to learning difficulty. The test content is designed to survey perceptual and neuropsychological functions basic to learning. It provides profiles of individual strengths and weaknesses in the foundational skills necessary for reading success. SEARCH provides a total score to assess vulnerability to educational failure. It has further power in offering clues as to clinical diagnoses as obtained in intensive psychiatric and neurological studies of individual children.

TEACH  is a resource book of instructional tasks designed to mesh with the SEARCH   profile of assets and deficits. These targeted perceptual simulations (SEARCH) relate directly to deficits uncovered by SEARCH and verified by a multidisciplinary assessment. TEACH, a program of 55 learning tasks, was carefully developed and tested during a four-year investigation of pre-reading skills to address the needs revealed by SEARCH. It is an individualized program, but does allow for some small group work of review activities with children of similar needs.

NILD ( National Institute for  Learning Development) was established in 1982 to assist schools, organizations and individuals in the development of programs for students with specific learning disabilities.

The Learning Propensity Assessment Device (LPAD)
The Learning Propensity Assessment Device (LPAD) is a dynamic approach to the assessment of cognitive functions and learning development based on the application of Professor Reuven Feuerstein’s theory of structural cognitive modifiability (SCM)  and  practice of mediated learning experience (MLE). It is dynamic   in contrast to conventional psychometric  testing  in that it assesses the learning potential of the examinee, identifies those cognitive functions that are deficient, fragile and well established.

The assessment offers indications of how a person learns, what types of educational interventions are needed to overcome any cognitive deficiencies and areas of learning potential that have not been previously identified.

LPAD Standard is for assessing individuals with general mental ages of 7 years and above (into adulthood).

The training to be an LPAD examiner occurs in two phases: Level  I, introduces  theory and  concepts of SCM and MLE, provides training in 6/7 instruments(tests/tools to conduct the assessment), and it introduces practice issues such as formulating recommendations, report writing and conveying results of the assessment.

It is generally recommended that participants in LPAD training have prior training and experience in applying SCM and MLE, usually obtained through receiving training in the Feuerstein Instrumental Enrichment (FIE) program. For trained psychologists and others with professional experience in fields of learning disability, speech and language development and related fields this condition can be waived.
